Wedding Party Roles & Responsibilities

Being asked to join a wedding party is a huge honor. It also comes with a specific set of expectations, financial commitments, and day-of duties. Here is everything you need to know.

It takes a village to pull off a flawless wedding. Your closest friends and family are there to support you emotionally, practically, and sartorially.

The Maid/Matron of Honor (MOH)

She is the captain of the bridal squad. The right-hand woman. Her duties span from the moment you get engaged until you leave for your honeymoon.

Pre-Wedding Duties:

  • Help shop for the wedding dress and bridesmaids' dresses.
  • Lead the planning and host the Bachelorette Party.
  • Co-host the bridal shower (often with the bride's mother).
  • Act as the bride's sounding board for decor ideas and themes.

Day-Of Duties:

  • Hold the bride's bouquet and the groom's ring during the ceremony.
  • Help the bride manage her train and veil.
  • Sign the marriage license as an official witness.
  • Give a speech/toast at the reception.

The Best Man

The groom's closest confidant. He is the logistical manager for the groomsmen and the keeper of the rings.

Pre-Wedding Duties:

  • Organize and host the Bachelor Party (and ensure everyone pays their share!).
  • Coordinate suit/tuxedo rentals or purchases for the groomsmen.
  • Attend the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.

Day-Of Duties:

  • Keep the groom calm and on schedule.
  • Hold the bride's ring until the exchange of vows.
  • Pay the officiant (often handled with an envelope prepared by the couple).
  • Give the first toast/speech at the reception.

The Financial Reality

Being in a wedding party is expensive. Members are traditionally expected to pay for their own attire (dresses/suits), travel, accommodations, and a portion of the bachelor/bachelorette parties. As a couple, you must be transparent about these costs upfront before asking someone to stand beside you.

Bridesmaids & Groomsmen

The supporting cast. Their primary job is to be helpful, enthusiastic, and on-time.

  • Purchase their required attire promptly.
  • Attend pre-wedding parties (showers, bachelor/bachelorette).
  • Help with DIY projects (like assembling favors or addressing invitations).
  • Serve as ushers if needed before the ceremony.
  • Be the first ones on the dance floor to encourage other guests!
