What is Editing Style?
The distinct aesthetic a photographer applies to raw images during post-production. Common styles include Light & Airy, Dark & Moody, True-to-Color, and Editorial.
After the cake is eaten and the dress is preserved, your photos are the only thing you get to keep from your wedding day. Choosing the right photographer is arguably your most important vendor decision.
Step 1: Determine Your Style
Before reaching out to anyone, you must understand the look you want. There are three main camps:
- Light & Airy: Pastel tones, very bright, romantic, slightly washed-out greens. Excellent for outdoor spring weddings.
- Dark & Moody: Deep shadows, rich warm tones, emotional. Perfect for autumn, forest, or intimate indoor venues.
- True-to-Color / Photojournalistic: Realistic colors, candid captures, less heavy processing. Timeless.
Step 2: Ask the Right Questions
When you interview a photographer, do not just look at their Instagram feed. Instagram only shows the highlights. You must ask to see a full wedding gallery to see how they handle dark reception halls, tricky family formals, and unpredictable weather.
Key questions to ask:
- What is your backup plan if you get sick or your equipment fails?
- How many images can we expect to receive, and what is the turnaround time?
- Do we have printing rights to the photos?
